Earlier this week, Berg Insight – a leading Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) analyst firm – released the third edition of their study “M2M Applications in the Oil and Gas Industry”, which looked in particular at the use of wireless communications.
According to Berg Insight, wireless solutions have become increasingly popular in oil and gas over the past few years, primarily due to the industries’ remote and inaccessible facilities, meaning wireless communications (in most cases) are the only viable option for transferring M2M data.
The key findings from the study include the following:
- In 2014 the number of deployed wireless M2M devices in oil and gas applications worldwide was 0.5 million
- M2M devices in oil and gas are forecast to grow at a CAGR of 20.1%, reaching 1.25 million by 2019
- 99 million of these units will run over cellular and 0.27 million over satellite
According to the report, the main drivers for the increased adoption rate of wireless M2M for oil and gas are environmental concerns, regulatory compliance, and the demand for improved operational efficiency. Berg Insight found that pipeline and tank monitoring will be the top use of M2M applications in the oil & gas industry, along with field equipment tracking.
Enabling oil and gas companies to gain immediate feedback on the status and operational effectiveness of remote assets, wireless M2M is becoming essential within these industries. As a result, the requirement for cost-effective and highly available connectivity also grows – for which cellular provides the scalability and flexibility to deliver to this growing network.
