Berg Insight – a global market research firm specialising in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and the Internet of Things (IoT) – recently published the fourth edition of their study “ITS in Public Transport”, which analyses the latest developments in the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) market for public transport in Europe.
According to Berg Insight, public transport plays a critical role in the European society, with a total of 56.8 billion public transport passenger journeys being carried out throughout the EU28 in 2012. As a result, the economic value of public transport services in Europe has been estimated to be around €150–200 billion per year, which represents approximately 1–1.5% of the GDP.
“ITS” has been defined by Berg Insight as information and communication technology applied to transport infrastructure and vehicles. This includes systems and terminals installed in public transport vehicles, designated stopping areas, depots, and back office IT systems, which ensure public transport services are operationally effective.
The key findings from the research include the following:
- ITS 2014 market value for public transport in Europe was €1.03 billion
- ITS in public transport is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 7.2%, reaching €1.46 billion by 2019
- The penetration of on-board computers with GPS location functionality and wireless communication in buses and trams is estimated to increase from 45.6% in 2014 to 58.2% in 2019
The research highlights that the European market for ITS in public transport is in a growth phase which will last for several years to come. This positive outlook is supported by several major international public transport related initiatives such as the EU project “European Bus System of the Future” (EBSF) and associated efforts such as EBSF_2 project launched in June 2015 at the UITP World Congress & Exhibition.
Enabling public transportation organisations to gain immediate feedback on the status and effectiveness of their fixed and mobile assets, as driven by ITS, demands a flexible connectivity solution which can be deployed and scaled cost-effectively – to which cellular networking is the answer.
The growth and widespread availability of LTE has given rise to a new era of high bandwidth and performance capabilities that enable smart applications to maintain an “anywhere, anytime” connection.
